Mecca of sea life - but not for us..

The next day was a Saturday and our mission was: get to Kaikoura somehow. You can probably guess what that means.. a lot of hitch hiking and standing on the street but we made it! We just got there in time to be able to go to the iSite and get some information on the whale watching and dolphin swimming tours. Dani really wanted to do the dolphin swimming but they were completely booked for the next day.. she didn't want to do the whale watching so Miri was struggling if she should do it.. in the end the iSite was closed when she decided to do it without Dani (well she had me with her.. so I told her that at least she won't be alone). But the company was still open and Miri had a freephone number to book her trip for the next day at 12:15.
And the next day there were no whales sighted on the first tour.. they had canceled all the tours for the rest of the day and told Miri that she could go on the one the next day at 7:15.. it was her last chance and actually I wanted to see the whales as well (when do you ever see those humongous animals??? I can't even picture it in my head how big they are...) so we booked that one and went out on the water first thing in the morning. Claudia, a girl we met in the Backpacker came with us as well:

So we drove out there, everybody went outside on the deck, the skipper put some kind of "whale finding thingi" into the water.. we waited.. and there was no whale.. bummer..
so we drove on for about 3 miles and the whole thing started from the beginning..
we did that for about 2 hours (5 times) and did not see one whale! All we saw was Albatrosses.. we were really depressed when we came back.. and tired! All that for nothing! The good thing was that we got 80% of the money back. So at least we didn't waist all our money...
What else happened? hmm oh yeah.. when Miri and I got back to the Backpacker the day before Dani had great news: she found a second hand book store which had the second part of twilight, new moon. Miri and Dani got really addicted to it and so Dani exchanged her German twilight book for that one. Good thing Miri bought herself another book so they don't fight over new moon too much... Those girls.. tststs

On our last day we went out to have some seafood.. yummy!

hmmmm..

So after this disappointment we took off for Christchurch where we could stay at Keiths house (remember.. he gave us a ride to Nelson).. our last hitch hike for New Zealand. It happened to be Nick, an around 50year old sailing guy.. it could have been Miris dad.. just because of everything. He had this part time job as a sailing guide for tourists in the Abel Tasman and has even lived on a sailboat for 6 years.. do you believe that? Well we all got along so good and he told us that he's going to LA on the 14th of April (so the time Miri and I are going to be there) and watch his son run in a race.. he's one of the best runners of whole New Zealand and has got a scholarship to go to Michigan State university! So yeah, we exchanged numbers and e-mail addresses and will probably meet up with him in LA.. isn't that great? Cool guy!

At night we went out again with Keith.. guess where we went.. to the best Thai (of course) restaurant in town ;-) but it wasn't an expensive one or something like that.. afterwards we went to one of the pubs, had a beer with Keith and Shaun (a japaniese girl who lived with Keith). That's it!
